"Mixed rice" — a bowl of warm rice topped with separately seasoned vegetables, a quick beef topping, and a fried egg, all mixed together with gochujang at the table. One of Korea's most recognizable dishes.
Marinate the beef
Toss the beef slices with soy sauce, sugar, sesame oil, and garlic, and let it sit.
10 minBlanch spinach and sprouts
Drop the spinach into boiling water briefly, then blanch the sprouts in a separate pot, drain and cool each, and season lightly with sesame oil and salt.
2 minSauté the vegetables
Stir-fry the carrot, zucchini, and mushrooms separately in a little oil until just tender, keeping each pile distinct.
6 minCook the beef
Stir-fry the marinated beef in a hot pan until browned and just cooked through.
4 minFry the eggs
Fry the eggs sunny-side up with crisp edges and a runny yolk.
3 minAssemble the bowls
Mound rice in each bowl, arrange the beef and vegetables in separate sections around it, and top with a fried egg.
Mix and serve
Add a spoonful of gochujang and a sprinkle of sesame seeds, then mix everything together at the table just before eating.
